Work experience

Work experience helps young people learn what different jobs are like and gain confidence in a real workplace. It lets them build important skills such as communicating well, working with others, managing their time and solving problems. It also helps them discover what they enjoy and what careers might suit them in the future.

Employers appreciate work experience because it shows that someone is motivated, dependable, and keen to learn. Even a short placement can strengthen applications for apprenticeships, part‑time jobs, college, or university.

Finding work experience

There are lots of ways for young people to find work experience. They can talk to teachers, careers advisers, family members, or directly contact local employers. Volunteering, community projects, careers events, and employer open days are also good places to look for opportunities.

It’s best to start searching a few months before school holidays or planned work experience weeks, as many organisations arrange placements early. After completing the placement, young people should write down what they did, what they learned, and any positive comments they received.

Keeping a simple record or adding the details to a CV or careers portfolio makes it easier to talk about the experience in future applications or interviews.
